A Skin Test with a Washington DC Allergist

When you’re unsure of what is causing your allergic symptoms, one of the first tests an allergist Washington DC has to offer may perform is a skin test. Also known as scratch testing, this method detects immediate sensitivity towards airborne and food-related allergies.

If you are an adult, the allergy skin test will be done with a plastic, toothpick-like, device that is dipped into the solution of the potential allergen. After, it will be applied to the skin that will be gently “scratched”. You will be asked to wait for approximately 15 minutes. At this time the test will be read. In general, a positive reaction will appear similar to a mosquito bite.

Preparing for Your Allergy Skin Test at Black & Kletz Allergy

Before you come for your appointment, an allergy doctor in Washington DC will discuss your individual concerns, as well as, how to prepare for the test. In general, the following will apply:

  • Avoid taking any allergy medications (i.e. Benadryl or Allegra) or decongestant for up to 48 before your testing. These medications could block the results of your allergy skin test, resulting in you having to reschedule the appointment.
  • Wear a top that is loose-fitting, since the test will be performed on your arms and/or back.
  • You do not need to follow any dietary recommendations unless specifically requested by the allergy doctor in Washington DC.
  • Your appointment will likely last for one to two hours.

Black & Kletz Allergy accepts most insurance companies, but you should contact yours to confirm whether or not allergy testing is covered. You should also ask about copay, a deductible, or any other responsibilities you might have.

Pediatric Skin Testing

If your child is undergoing an allergy skin test, a different device will be used. This multi-test device will test for multiple allergens at the same time.

Preparing for  Pediatric Skin Test

  • Unless otherwise stated by the allergy doctor, your child should not take any allergy medications, antihistamines, or decongestants for at least 48 hours before the appointment.
  • Your child should wear a loose-fitting top since the skin test will be conducted on the back and/or arms.
  • Unless requested by the allergy doctor, there are no dietary restrictions prior to the test.
  • If multiple children will be tested together, it may help to have another adult with you to ensure all children can be supervised and are comfortable. Please consult our office to learn more.
  • The appointment may last one to two hours.
  • It is advisable to ask your insurance company if the child’s allergy skin testing is covered. Be sure to confirm any copays or deductibles.
